There’s double the fun this April as New Britain Youth Theater stages two fun-filled family shows for audiences of all ages!

Penny & the Pirates is an original play by Anthony DePoto and Matt Austin, writers of last season’s Unlocked: The True Story of Rapunzel, about a young girl who joins a band of pirates on a journey to find an unusual buried treasure! “It's a high seas adventure that'll knock your socks off,” says NBYT Executive Director Darren Farrington, “and that might be a clue about what the treasure is!” The play stars young actors ages 6 through 9 from throughout central Connecticut.

Penny & the Pirates will be performed at the New Britain-Berlin YMCA, located at 50 High Street, in downtown New Britain. Performances areFriday, April 8, at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 9, at 7:00 p.m.; and Sunday, April 10, at 2:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $6 for children, students, and seniors.

The theater’s second show in April is Honk! Jr, a “quackingly good” musical adaptation, by the writers of new music for Broadway’s Mary Poppins, of the story of The Ugly Duckling, one of the most beloved fables about the challenges and victories of being different. “A cast of actors ages 8 through 16 have been rehearsing their singing, dancing and acting since January, and this is sure to be one of our most fun shows for both the cast and audience,” says Farrington.

Honk! Jr will be performed at Holmes Elementary School, a community space located at 2150 Stanley Street in New Britain. Performances are Friday, April 29, at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 30, at 7:00 p.m.; and Sunday, May 1 at 2:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $13 for adults and $11 for children, students, and seniors.

Tickets for both productions may be reserved by calling New Britain Youth Theater at 860-515-8115 or may be purchased online at
